Skye Terrier

The Skye Terrier originated in UK. They were developed on the remote, rugged island of Skye, off the north-west coast of Scotland. All-purpose, hardy little dogs, Skye Terriers were an invaluable help on small farms where he was used to dig out small rodents and pests which ate the crops and pasture which was needed for sheep.

The word "terrier" comes from the Latin "terra" meaning earth. He digs in the earth to find the dens of small animals. He has a rough, long coat which protected him in the icy, snowy Scottish winters. His long hair covers his eyes.

Read the early history of dogs.

The most famous Skye Terrier of all time was Bobby, who became known as "Greyfriars Bobby." Bobby was the faithful companion of an old shepherd who lived in Edinburgh, Scotland.  Bobby helped his master look after sheep. The master died and left Bobby desolate. The shepherd's body was taken by a horse-drawn hearse to Greyfriars Churchyard, where he was buried. Bobby followed the hearse and after the funeral he lay down on the grave and stayed there. He made the graveyard his home, probably catching field mice, birds and whatever he could, to survive. Every day at one o'clock in Edinburch, a gun is fired from the castle. Citizens check their watches by it. This was the time that the shepherd used to take Bobby to the shops to buy lunch. After his master's death, Bobby still went to the familiar shops where a kindly baker took pity on him and fed him every day with pies or whatever he had left over. When Bobby died, he was buried in the churchyard beside the master he loved. The citizens of Edinburgh was so moved by the dog's devotion that they erected a statue of Bobby and a drinking well for dogs.

If you are ever in Edinburgh you will hear the one o'clock gun and can visit Bobby's statue and the interesting Greyfriar's Churchyard.

We admire the devotion of a dog to his master. How is OUR devotion to our heavenly Master? (The one who gives us our daily bread?) Jesus said, "If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself. Don't hang on to worldly things. What good is it to gain the whole world and lose your own soul?"

 Matthew 16, 24 - 26
