Shih Tzu

About the breed

The Shih Tzu (pronounced sheed zoo) originated in Tibet. They were bred by monks in the temple. From there  they emigrated to China and then on to England. They are now found in many parts of  the world. Read the early history of dogs.

Shih Tzus have remarkably long hair which flows right down to the ground. They need daily brushing to keep the coat from tangling. A good ladies' dog! He is best suited to being a house dog as the long hair gets dirty if he goes wading in streams and rolling on the ground. Like all dogs though, the Shih Tzu enjoys going for a walk. The long hair on the head can be tied up to keep it out of the eyes. The Shih Tzu has a flat face with big eyes and an endearing expression.
