Schipperkes

Schipperkes originated in Belgium where they were used as barge dogs. Canals were dug & waterways constructed. Barges (boats) were used to transport cargo from town to town. Often, the barge also housed the captain, his family, & his little dog. The dog was useful to chase rats off the boat. Schipperkes easily fit in to households where space is limited.

Schipperkes is pronounced shipperky. It's a hard word to spell! Folk write shiperky, shippertjie, shippyky, and all sorts! The name means skipper, or captain.

Schipperkes have good natures & love fun.

The coat is harsh, with a mane round the neck, & long hair on hind legs.

Colour: Usually black. Other whole colours are allowed, but no spots!

How breeds of dogs developed.

Schipperkes are not the first breed to have lived on a boat. Once there was a flood that covered the earth as far as the eye could see. Noah built a gigantic barge & rescued dogs & other animals. Many of the people that drowned in the flood could have been saved if they had believed God's warnings. Often we are aware of God speaking to us through our conscience, but we suppress it, and miss God's best. We "drown" in our own troubles instead of looking up to God.

This little schipperke is liver-colored. He is the size of a Jack Russell. His tail is curled over his back. Ears are erect and alert. His snout is sharp.
