 Saluki

Salukis are tall, with a dignified, graceful appearance.

Arabs used salukis for hunting gazelle. They are fast, with great stamina for the chase. The saluki is an ancient breed, known to have been in existence since 329 BC.

How the different breeds of dogs originated.

The coat coat is soft and silky. It can be feathered or smooth. Brushing helps to keep the dog looking neat.

A puppy socialisation class, followed by a training class, is recommended for this wilful, headstrong breed!

Salukis are good-natured with children and other dogs, but may be shy of people they do not know.

A dog-proof fence is necessary, as a hound is an animal that chases other animals, and your dog may disappear and go off hunting on his own!

Class: hound

Height: males 58 - 71 cms at shoulder, females a little smaller.

Colour: Salukis come in many colours! White, cream, fawn, golden, red, grizzle, tan, black and tan, or tricoloured.

Dogs have been used by man for hunting since ancient times. When I picture a saluki and the hunters racing in hot pursuit of a deer, I feel sorry for the deer! I hope it will jump into a thorn bush and hide till the dogs have gone. I can picture the frightened deer, heart racing and tongue panting for water.

It reminds me of songs 42 & 43 in the Bible, "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God. Rescue me from deceitful and wicked men!"

A good prayer when we're cornered!
