| Presa Canario DogsThe presa Canario is a molosser type dog, developed in the Canary Islands, off the north west coast of Africa. The language is Spanish. Presa Canarios were bred for the sport of dog-fighting. Dog fights were popular in the 1800's but are now banned. The dogs had to be big and powerful. Ears were cropped to make them stand erect off a big square head. This gave the dog more height, and a more fierce appearance. Ear cropping, tail docking, and any form of mutilation is now being outlawed world wide. The breed may have been developed by crossing imported English mastiffs with local large dogs. Other names for these dogs are Dogo Canario, Canary Dog, and Perro de Presa Canario. Presas need careful socialization and training from puppyhood. A dog which can knock it's owner over, or attack other dogs, must be dominated and kept under control. The owner must be consistent in training, and act as the pack leader. If the dog/owner relationship is correct, then a Presa Canario will make a loyal, protective pet.
Color: usually brindle or fawn, and some have white markings. Weight: 80-130 pounds (36-59 kg.)
