Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen (PBGV)I "Petit" is a French word meaning "small." "Basset" has come to mean "short-legged" though it may not have meant this originally. It is thought to have come from the French word "bas" meaning low. Griffon refers to the rough coat. Vendée is the name of an area on the west coast of France. Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens' short legs make it easy for them to run along with their nose on their ground. The harsh, hairy coat gives them protection from thorn bushes, and from the cold French winters. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was bred in France to track and chase game. He has a good nose for following the scent of animals. He is a "hound", meaning a dog who seeks out game. He is not to be confused with the Basset Hound, which has a short smooth coat. Read about the Basset Hound to find out more about the beginnings of the basset-type dogs. And the early history of dogs, and development of breeds. The PBGV has a happy, outgoing temperament and makes a good pet. He will enjoy a big garden where he can run and get lots of exercise and where he can bark and not be too close to neighbours. The colour and markings of the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen are of no importance. Height should be 34 - 38 cms at the shoulder. Class: Hound
