Japanese Kai Dogs
Kai dogs originate in Japan. They are a rare breed. The breed is also known as the Tora dog, or Kai tora-ken, tora meaning tiger. The name tora is thought to describe the brindle (striped) coat. They are also known as Kai Inu, or Kai Ken: 甲斐犬. It gets its name from the Kai district of Japan (Yamanashi Prefecture) Kais fall in the spitz category. They have tails that curl up over the body, and erect ears. It is a medium sized hunting dog. They have tapered heads and narrow skulls, compared to the other Japanese spitz dogs. They were bred to hunt big animals like bears & deer. It takes several dogs to bring down a large animal, so the dogs hunt in packs. Hunting dogs have a tendency to aggression, so careful discipline is necessary in puppyhood, but the dog will bond with his master and will be happy as a one-man-dog. The Japanese protect this breed as a national monument.
