| Dog FoodDogs today have become domesticated to the extent that many humans feed their dog the same food as themselves. This can be detrimental to the dog's health, as many foods that humans eat, are bad for dogs. For example, chocolate, salt, sugar, onions, grapes, raisins, bubble gum & chewing gum. Bones should not be given to a dog. Even a large bone can be gnawed smaller and can swallowed, causing rupture of internal organs. Bones can lodge in the throat or stomach, requiring an operation to remove them. Your vet can advise you on a good quality dog food that is meant specifically for dogs. These dry foods are balanced, and the dog can survive without any other food. There are special formulas for puppies, containing higher levels of protein for fast growers. Dogs however do enjoy a little novelty now & then, so you may wish to add a dollop of tinned food dog food on the top occasionally. For old dogs who have no teeth, add a little water just before serving, to soften the dry pellets. Remove uneaten food as it will go sour. The first dogs were wolves and wild dogs. The food God intended them eat was raw meat, which they had to hunt for. He gave them strong teeth to rip off the fur from the victim, and muscular bodies to chase the quarry over long distances. Dogs expended lots of energy in obtaining food. Many dog owners feed their dogs raw meat. Others cook it. Dogs today tend to be overweight, so try to avoid over-feeding especially if the dog gets little exercise. Obesity can lead to heart, spinal, or many other health problems.
