American Curl cats
The American curl cat developed from a stray black cat that wandered into the life of a family in Lakewood, California, USA. The cat had strange ears that curled backwards. They decided to show her to cat breeders, who bought kittens and developed a breed. It
was named " American Curl," and became a breed recognized by both the International Cat Association
(TICA) and the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA)
in 1985/6. When American Curl kittens are born, they have straight ears, which begin to curl backwards a few days after birth.
For four months, the ears curl and uncurl until the main part remains `fixed’, leaving only the very tips soft and flexible. The
exposed ears are protected by of long hair. American Curls come in both the long and shorthaired
variety. Coats are silky and smooth with an undercoat and a fluffy, graceful tail. There is
a variety of colors and color combinations.
They range from black to white, and everything in between, including tabby and tortoise shell. American Curls are small cats, playful and amusing. They have gentle natures and make friendly pets.
