Cane Corso
Cane corso is pronounced as can-eh cor-so. It is a large mastiff dog, emanating from the massive molossers of Italy. It is an Italian mastiff, in other words. Cane corsos were kept to guard property, protect their family and livestock, and to hunt large game. They are loyal, devoted, and gentle with their families, making good watchdogs. The head is slightly wrinkled. The ears are triangular. It was once the custom to crop the ears; it was thought that erect ears gave the dog a more ferocious appearance. But cropping (cutting off the flesh) is falling out of fashion world wide. Some dogs have their tail amputated, but nowadays this is not necessary. The breed standard says, "In the case of natural tails, the tip reaches the hock but not below. Carried low, it is neither broken nor kinked but supple. Hanging when the dog is in repose; generally carried level with the back or slightly above the level of the back when the dog is in action, without curving over the back or being curled." The coat is short. Color
: black,
gray, fawn, and red. Brindling is allowed on all of these colors. Solid fawn and
red, including lighter and darker shades, have a black or gray mask. The mask
does not go beyond the eyes. There may be a white patch on the chest, throat,
chin, backs of the pasterns, and on the toes. How the different breeds of dogs developed
