| BriardThe briard is thought to originate in France. It is an ancient breed, though scarce today. The breed was known in Napoleon's day, and even farther back. The French name is Chien Berger de Brie. They were used in the two world wars to carry supplies and to sniff for wounded soldiers. Their guarding instincts made them useful alarm dogs in the battle fields. Briards were also bred as herding dogs in France. Herders like to guard and protect their family. It's best to keep them indoors as they like to be part of the family. Puppies need to be socialized and trained from an early age. The coat is long and harsh. It needs a good brush at least once a week.
