Andalusian Horses
Andalusians originated in Spain. (Iberia) Andalusia is a province in Spain. They are purebred Spanish horses referred to as PRE (Pura Raza Espaņola) They are one of the most ancient breeds of horses. Carthusian monks began keeping pedigrees in the 13th century. The breeding program had the backing of royalty. The Carthusian order began in the Chartreuse mountains of France. The monks' motto is Stat crux dum volvitur orbis, Latin for "The cross (of Christ) is steady while the world is turning." Andalusians became recognized as a breed in 15th Century. After nearly dying out because of wars in Europe, the breed was carefully revived and for a long time it was illegal to export Andalusian horses from Iberia. This was revoked in 1960. They are strong, impressive and athletic. The Andalusian has appeared in many films, such as The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe, and other stories from The Chronicles of Narnia. The color is normally gray, but bay & black are not unknown. Tail: long, flowing. Mane: thick, profuse. Neck: arched Height: 15.2 and 16.2 hands (62 to 66 inches, 157 to 168 cms) high. Temperament: docile, trainable.
