Standard poodleThe standard poodle is the tallest of the poodle family, and can be considered a large dog (not like the toy & miniature poodles you carry around!) Bred to hunt water birds, breeders experimented with styles of cutting the coat so that it did not get water-logged. The poodle clip has now become an art form. They have to be clipped in a certain style to conform to the breed standard. They are sometimes called French poodles but probably originated in Russia or Germany.
