| The Selkirk
Rex originates in Montana, USA. They are named after a person whose family
name is Selkirk, and not after the Scottish town of Selkirk. Rex means
curly coated.
A feral cat mated in a secret place and, in a
rescue centre, produced a kitten with curly whiskers, green eyes, and a
blue-cream wavy coat. The father of the kitten is not known. The curly
kitten was called Miss DePesto, or "Pest," for short, because of
her inquisitiveness & craving for attention. The kitten was
adopted by a family, but she was too much of a pest, so she was rejected
& ended up in a shelter again. While still a young cat, Pest was
adopted by Jeri Newman 1n 1987. The story has a happy ending, because Jeri
saw the potential in this cat; the little cat that nobody wanted got
married to a handsome prince - a pedigreed black Persian cat, producing 3
curly coat kittens, and 3 straight hair kittens. By mating child with
mother, more curly cats were born, and eventually the curly gene became
dominant and a fine new breed came into existence. So Miss dePesto, the
pest, is now world-famous!
The Selkirk rex is a medium sized, playful breed.
Today there is variety of coat color and eye color.
Curly cats have cropped up in other parts of the
world, eg England and Europe. Breeders have developed different
breeds of rex cats. for example, Cornish Rex,
and Devon Rex.

There
are many rejected animals in rescue shelters who have great potential.
There are orphaned and abandoned children in shelters too. Let's give them
a chance to prove their worth!
Let's praise God with these words, "You knit
me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am wonderfully
made. I was made in the secret place but Your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me were written in your book before they came to
be."
