Portuguese Water DogThis breed originated in Portugal, a country in western Europe. Portugal shares a border with Spain. The name of the breed in Portuguese is Cao de Agua. The dogs were bred to assist fishermen. They were trained to dive off a boat and retrieve a net, or a fish. They made good guard dogs aboard ship while the boats were moored in the harbour. They are strong swimmers, very at home in water. PuppiesPortuguese water dog puppies must be supervised near water. Be careful your puppy does not jump into a swimming pool, Jacuzzi, or fish pond. Puppies don't know how to get out, and they will drown. These dogs have great stamina and energy. They will enjoy going to a training class with their owner. Portuguese water dogs are suitable for folk who are allergic to pets. Coat: A Portuguese water dog can have a curly or wavy coat.
