Neapolitan MastiffThe Neapolitan Mastiff (Mastino Napoletano) is registered as a separate breed from the Mastiff. In days of old, large dogs were used in war as fighting dogs, or to herd livestock and as guard dogs. Since the history of large mastiff type dogs goes back for thousands of years, it is not clear where they originated but they may have originated in Italy as they are said to have been used as combat dogs by Roman soldiers. They were redisovered at a dog show in Naples, Italy, in 1946. A breeder called Piere Scanziani started breeding them selectively, and the neapolitan mastiff breed standard was drawn up. Neapolitan Mastiffs have big heads with lots of loose skin hanging down from the upper lips and neck. The head is wrinkled. The skin is loose all over. They are heavy boned and muscular. Because of their massive size, they are intimidating dogs until one gets to know them. They love to go for long walks. The coat is short. All large breeds need careful socializing and training from an early age. A big dog can easily knock over a child or old person. Owners who allow their dog to become a nuisance, get a breed a bad name, and can cause a breed to be classified as dangerous and be banned. Height: 65 - 75 cms at shoulder. Weight: 110 - 150 lbs Color: Black, blue, or mahogany
