   Japanese Spitz

The Japanese spitz is a small white dog, and is thought to have resulted from breeding Samoyeds from Siberia until the breed got smaller. They possibly are also related to other Arctic dogs, like Pomeranians. (A white pom looks like a mini spitz!)

The spitz breed was popular in Japan in the 1950's and has now spread throughout the world.

The Japanese spitz makes a good watch dog that is small enough to live in the house. They will bark to sound the alarm. Barking can annoy neighbours, but they can be taught to be quiet on command.

The word "spitz" describes the type of the many breeds who are wolf-like with a distinctive tail carried aloft & curled over the back. These other breeds, eg  chow chow & shiba inu, can be other colours, but the Japanese spitz is white.

The Japanese spitz has a shaggy mane of long hair around the neck & shoulders. The hind legs have breeches of long hair at the top, and short hair at the bottom. Forelegs feathered. Feet well-feathered.

The snout is sharp, tapering to the black nose, giving the face a fox-like appearance.

Ears: erect.

Tail: long haired, curled over the back.

Coat: long haired, with thick, white undercoat. Regular combing & brushing helps to remove dead hair before it gets on the furniture! Too much bathing can rob the hair of its natural oil.

Height at shoulder: 12 - 15", 30 - 38 cm

Weight: 11 - 20 lbs, 5 - 10 kg

Group: Northern

A spitz is a happy, cheerful dog. They just have to look at us and we feel cheerful. The Bible says, "A cheerful look brings joy to the heart." Proverbs 15, 30. Let's try to spread some cheerfulness today!
