Havanese DogsHavanese get their name from the town of Havana, on the island of Cuba in the Caribbean. The breed developed from dogs brought to the island by traders from the Mediterranean - Bichon Frisé, Maltese and Bolognese types. The little dogs were regarded as a status symbol by the wealthy, and were never sold to the lower classes. Even the ruling class could not buy them. They could be given as gifts, but were never sold. A revolution changed Cuba, and many wealthy folk emigrated. A few dogs were taken to USA, where the breed was revived. Havanese are good natured, sociable dogs that make good house dogs. They are lively and playful. They love to play with other dogs & kids. The double coat is long & soft, and can be curly or wavy. It is left natural - never trimmed. Constant brushing is needed to prevent matting, so this is not a breed for folk with little time to spare.
